What Is Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene in Polyurethane Foaming?

Polyether Polyols:

1.Most polyether polyols pose minimal health risks, but those initiated with amines can irritate skin and eyes. Additives may also have unknown effects.

2.If polyol contacts skin, wash with soap; if it gets in the eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.

3.Swallowing small amounts poses little harm, but large amounts require medical attention.

4.Polyol spills should be absorbed with sawdust or similar materials and incinerated. (Do not use water.)

Isocyanates:

1.Isocyanates are highly reactive and can alter proteins and deactivate enzymes, damaging cells—especially in the presence of catalysts—without safety precautions.

2.The harmful component of isocyanates is –HNCO.

Toxicity and First Aid for Isocyanates:

1.Eyes—If splashed into eyes, rinse with low-pressure water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical help.

2.Respiratory—Move the exposed person to a well-ventilated area, remove contaminated clothing, and provide immediate medical treatment.

3.Skin—Direct contact may cause redness, blisters, burns, or allergic reactions.

4.Ingestion—Drink large amounts of water or milk. Do not induce vomiting.
