End-to-end solutions from raw materials to production equipments for PU foam and mattress.
Polyurethane foam production is primarily a chemical reaction process in which raw materials undergo mixing through specially designed processing machinery. During the chemical reaction, the material undergoes a rapid transformation in form. The main raw materials used include polyether or polyester polyols and isocyanates, along with auxiliary additives. The open-cell or closed-cell structure of the foam can be adjusted through formulation and process conditions or modified through post-processing.
Polyurethane equipment typically refers to systems that meet the necessary temperature, metering, and mixing requirements for chemical reactions while also providing shaping, processing, and other auxiliary production functions.
With advancements in polyurethane chemistry, raw materials such as polyols, chain extenders, blowing agents, catalysts, and surfactants are often pre-mixed into a stable component, commonly referred to as the polyol component. The isocyanate is treated as a separate component, known as the isocyanate component. This innovation has simplified the complex setup of multiple storage tanks, transportation systems, metering units, and temperature control systems—reducing the number of required systems from seven or eight to just two or three. This simplification has made foaming machinery more practical and precise, laying the foundation for modern foam machine design.
Types of Polyurethane Foam Products and Production Methods
Polyurethane foam products can generally be classified into three categories based on their shape and form:
These products are manufactured using different forming methods such as casting, injection molding, and spraying, with corresponding production and processing machinery. Production methods can be either continuous or discontinuous (batch-based). The suitable forming methods for different polyurethane foam products are outlined as follows:
Polyurethane Foam Production Process
Polyurethane foam is typically produced using a one-step process. The various raw materials are accurately metered by component-specific pumps and fed into the mixing head at precise ratios. Through casting, injection, or spraying methods, the materials undergo a chemical reaction within a continuous or individual molding system, expanding into foam plastic.
Foaming machines are classified into high-pressure and low-pressure types based on the working pressure of the metering pumps.
Foam Processing Equipment
In most cases, polyurethane foam blocks are semi-finished materials that require further cutting, lamination, or additional processing to be made into final foam products or materials. This necessitates the use of various foam processing machines. Foam sheets, once cut to the required length and width, can often be used directly. Molded foam parts, after cleaning, trimming, or surface coating, can be used as finished products.
